The Golden Compass: His Dark Materials book #1
For lovers of the Chronicles of Narnia, you will love it due to its similarities or hate it due to its similarities. I wish this felt a little more original to me. I really did enjoy the story, the entire series really, but there was quite a bit that I felt paralleled CS Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. Ms.Coulter the evil queen, children on a adventures to other worlds, talking polar bears. It was all fantastical. Not to say that I didn’t like it because i very much did. I love Lyra’s spirit and need for knowledge and truth. The discovery of Dust that apparently has something to do with the nature of life plays a large role in the mysteries that are surrounding her and the disappearance of her , Roger, a well as other children. You follow Lyra through a frozen world on a mission to save them fighting along side polar bear warriors. All the while her mysterious uncle and Ms. Coulter are elbow deep in what ever is happening these children.
I can certainly see why this was made into a film. I wish as most do that the film was more true to the book. If it were it might have done better, then again it was competing against several other fantasy titles, like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, at the time.
Its a good middle school read.
